Part French, part Spanish and part Mediterranean it’s no wonder Catalan cuisine is so lip-smackingly good – and no wonder too that the city’s residents dedicate so much time and money on eating out. It’s not just the locals who are keen though, Barcelona is a global magnet for foodies thanks to the amazing quality of restaurants plying their trade in the city, from passionately-run neighbourhood joints to a profusion of Michelin-starred establishments offering extravagant tasting menus to well-heeled diners.
For a low cost, high reward gastronomic experience visitors can opt for traditional local dishes like escudella and ollada (two tasty stews) as well as Catalan-style cod, best enjoyed with a sea breeze at the high-end joints around Port Olimpic. Just be sure to order some of the famous pan amb tomaquet (tomato bread) on the side. More southern Spanish-style tapas bars are also in abundance, and the cosmopolitan nature of the city means you can also find fantastic Galician, Basque and Castilian cuisine on offer. Otherwise Barcelona has plenty of international restaurants to try out, from upmarket haunts dotted around the Eixample district, to the multitude of ethnic options in Raval and Gracia.
For legendary hang outs, Els Quatre Gats is the locale where Picasso first exhibited his artwork, and whilst the renowned elBulli (voted the best restaurant in the world a zillion years running) is now a food foundation, epicureans can dine instead at one of the Adria brothers' new ventures. Meanwhile the culinary revolution that Ferran Adria kickstarted can still be experienced in eateries around the city, as creativity runs rife in kitchens in every corner of the Catalan capital.
