English Language Cinemas

Intro

Sure, going to the cinema and watching a movie in the local language can be a lot of fun and it’s great practice for sharpening your language skills. But sometimes, it’s nice just to watch a film in your native tongue. Luckily for us “angloparlantes”, there are plenty of places to catch a flick in English in Barcelona.

The giveaway clue that a cinema shows movies in English is that its listings will have “VO” or “version original” next to the title. This means that the film will be shown in whatever language it was originally shot in, along with subtitles in Spanish or Catalan. (Of course, this doesn’t always mean you’ll get an English language movie).

There are a good number of cinemas in the city that regularly show VO films. Here are some of the best places in Barcelona to see English language films.

One tip – Mondays tend to be the cheapest days to go. You can see them for nearly half the price of a Saturday showing.

English Language Cinemas in Barcelona

Cinemes Girona (C/Girona 175)

A small art house cinema with three screens, this theatre specialises in multicultural cinema from around the world. They often run themed film festivals, and also show lots of movies in Catalan.

Cinema Malda (C/Pi 5)

Cinema Malda gives films a second chance, showing flicks you may have missed the first time around. Tickets cost just €4 on Wednesdays. The tickets are day entry prices, so you pay once and can see as many films as you’d like during that day.

Cinemes Melies (C/Villarroel 102)

This tiny cinema always shows films in VO. They’ve got just two screens, but screen up to eight different films a week, which range from classics of the silver screen to new independent releases.

Cinemas Texas (C/Bailen 205)

This may be the cheapest way to go to the movies in Barcelona, with tickets costing just €2 or €3 apiece. The reason the tickets are so cheap is they screen the films slightly later than the premiere releases. You can occasionally catch a Catalan film here with English subtitles.

Cines Verdi (C/Verdi 43)

A small cinema in the Gracia district that mainly shows independent movies from around the world, but they’ll occasionally screen a big name flick as well. Double check whether the film you want to see is shown at Verdi or Verdi Park, which is a four-screen extension on the next street over (C/Torrijos).

Filmoteca de Catalunya (Pl. Salvador Segui 1)

A government-funded cinema in the Raval, the Filmoteca shows both artsy new releases and classic films. They’ve also got a large library with material about all things movie-related. For real cinema fans who plan on going back often you can buy booklets 20 tickets for €50.

Multicines Balmes (C/Balmes, 422-424)

Located in near the El Putxet FGC stop, this cinema is a bit of a ways out from the city centre. They have 12 screens (including two 3D ones), and show big-name movies in the original language.

Phenomena (C/Sant Antoni Maria Claret 168)

This is definitely not your average cinema. The listings cycle through a mix of new releases, re-leased versions of classic, showings of cult movies, themed double features, kids’ movies, and more. With some seriously dedicated fans, going to this cinema is always quite the experience.

Renoir Floridablanca (C/Floridablanca 135)
The Renoir theatre tends to play a mix of Spanish, British, and American films in their original versions. If you want to see a big new English-language release, the chances are good they’ll have it here (along with a few lesser-known titles too).

Yelmo Icaria (C/Salvador Espriu 61)

Inside a quite frankly hideous shopping centre by the beach, this cinema has 15 screens and is pretty much guaranteed to be showing the latest blockbuster movies in English.
