Casa Amatller
Wonderful house on 'The Block of Discord'
Although this Modernista mansion is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular buildings in Barcelona, chances are you might overlook it entirely. Why? Because it has the bad luck of being right next door to one of Gaudi’s most famous works, Casa Batllo.
Still, the building is just as impressive and detailed as anything Mr. Gaudi did, and comes with the added benefit of having far shorter queues to get in.
It was originally designed for chocolatier Antoni Amatller by another of Barcelona’s star architects, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, and today you can still buy Amatller chocolates in the shop on the ground floor that’s open to the public. Behind the shop is a cafe that serves up light lunches and coffees and makes an ideal stop in the middle of a busy day of sightseeing.
You can also take a guided tour of the house, however slots are limited. Currently there is a daily English language tour at 11am with a maximum of 12 people. The price is €14, and you can book online via the official Barcelona tourism website. Check the link on the right of this page.
